Something beautiful happened when one Detroit Police Department officer rescued a poor Pit Bull dog abandoned on a porch in the cold.
What a champion — Officer Eric McCombs placed her in the warmth of 12, the moment he pulled this poor soul from her freezing hell proved no less and that alone was enough to warm hearts all over
It really broke my heart to think someone would leave a nice little animal out in the cold to suffer,” which is sadly a regular practice here in Detroit, she said.
Luckily, however, there are passionate individuals such as officer McCombs to keep the stories of rescue and shelter alive against all odds.
Pit Bull Shelter -20° Windchill
Patrolling in the middle of the night, Officer McCombs came across a dog who appeared to be stuck outside for the freezing cold. The dog was bound on a chain that had become ensnared on a porch.
This officer is a tremendous lover of dogs, and didn’t even contain hesitation to spare this poor girl.
So, when I walked up to her — I was like, ‘This cannot be. McCombs told The Dodo, He probably figured she was going to pass away soon, too so he thought, I didn’t really think it through. But I just knew that I had to do something for this dog.’
The windchill that night in Detroit went all the way down to -20 degrees, an inclement cold too much for any dog to be outdoors 24 hours a day.
It was its unfairness that made me angry; how it was a deliberate act. Who could do this? Officer McCombs said: ‘Someone thought, ‘I’m going to chain this dog to the porch and leave her like that while she was staving’.
This poor dog was not only freezing, but she was also starving! It is apparent that she has been starving, and she is eager to accept the treats they offered her and stuff them into her mouth as soon as possible. It is amazing how one can so easily tell someone was not just hungry but starving.
From her appearance alone, it was easy to deduce that she had not eaten in a while.
And as they freed her from the porch it terrified but relieved. And she hopped right into the police car.
“‘The tips of her ears had frostbite. We put her in the car, and my partner said to me: ‘Now what? Which is why McCombs said she had to take the woman to an animal shelter.

So they took the dog to Detroit Animal Care and Control.
However, one of the officers just couldn’t get her out of his head.
Happy Beginnings
While at the shelter, Officer McCombs continually thought how she deserved more than a kennel crate.
She should have had a nice life. But who was going to give her that?
It wasn’t long before officer McCombs knew that he had fallen in love with this little sweetie – whom he named Sweet Pea — and decided to legally adopt her.
At this point, he contacted Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue, and here was their post on Facebook:
“One of the officers was haunted by her, so he called us up and we went and got her today. Not you, DPD Officer McCombs — she will be adopted by her hero, after we take care of all her medical needs!
Eric had one dog already (Homer), but deep down he felt this little girl needed saving. “It was a special moment. Twice the food, twice the vet, twice everything else. I had to,” McCombs said.
Sweet Pea had never been an indoor dog before, so when she first arrived in her new home, there were many things for her to learn. She never jumped on the couch or bed nor did she touch peanut butter.
All she needed was time, and boy, did she get it.
It was not long before Sweet Pea got used to her new life and began loving the love surrounding her.

Now she is living the dream life with her past life on the streets of Detroit, a foggy memory.
Truly A Hero
Sweet Pea isn’t the only dog officer McCombs has pulled from Detroit streets.
He literally saves dogs everywhere he goes, and is truly a light of inspiration for many overlooked and unwanted dogs in need.
“Why not rescue Pit Bulls and be a cop at the same time?” As he asked, and I did too, why not?
And big thanks to Officer Eric McCombs for all you have done for these innocent furry creatures. You do make a difference in their lives just by being compassionate and dedicated.

Detroit Pit Crew Dog Rescue said, “We’re so proud to have Officer McCombs as a member of our team, and we are thankful that he is an officer who goes above and beyond to help voiceless animals who need a hero.
