Gatson, a La-Z-Boy La-Z-Boy which was one of the many abandoned dogs who continued to wait for their owners day after day, not knowing they would never return.
Waiting On A Deserted Road
In June 2019, a puppy roughly 4 months old and clinging to life next to an abandoned chair on Gatson Road was recovered in Lincoln County, Mississippi.
Sharon Norton, an animal control officer, responded. Next to an abandoned television in a dump was a small puppy who was already sitting in a recliner seat. She felt really sad when she saw him.
He was thin and obviously had not eaten in days. His owner never came, and although he was starving, his eyes still shone with a glimmer of hope.
The pup was unable to understand that he was dumped in a chair and left. He sat unable to move out of his space.
Feeling Relaxed And Safe
He was fed by Norton, who was able to get within striking distance of him. A dog that just needed someone to give him treats and say the supportive words that no one had said to him in a while.
He felt relaxed. Norton managed to win his confidence.
When I picked him up and placed him in the back of the animal control truck, he was so happy. His tail was wagging, I felt it, a baton on my back. Norton said, “He knows he’s safe now.”
The Brookhaven City Shelter took him in at the request of Norton. He received a bath and treatment for ringworm. From there he was transferred to Brookhaven Animal Rescue League to continue his recovery.
Because she found him off the South Houston road, Norton named him La-Z-Boy after the recliner and the road.
According to his rescue staff, he is a playful little guy who enjoys napping, relaxing, and simply being around people and other animals. He is a social boy and has lots of playfriends. He loves to splash around, and so that is one of his favorite things to do.
He was taken to a foster home when he was back on his feet, prayed that there would be a family who would adopt him soon. Luckily, he didn’t wait long.
His Happy Ending
La-Z-Boy Gatson took to his Instagram in July of 2019 announcing he had been adopted to his furever home and family.
When his heartrending story reached the ears of his new parents, Dave Trammell and Sommer Guy, they drove for more than 15 hours from Michigan to Mississippi to meet him and take him home.
“The sight of him hit me in some way. Trammell said: “He just looked so adorable and pitiful.”
At his new home, La-Z-Boy adjusted quickly. Within days, his demeanor relaxed, going to sleep on his back, tummy in the air.
He wanted a place where he could call home, I think. He seemed to appreciate it when we arrived here,” Trammell said.
La-Z-Boy and his family reside in Plymouth, Michigan. He loves his naps and drives with his dog sister Penelope. We are so glad he is living his best life.
