Hey there! You know, saying goodbye to a pet is never easy, but when that pet is also your work partner, it hits on a whole different level. I recently heard about K9 Tommy, a German Shepherd who served with the Ohio Department of Natural Resources for seven years, and his story truly moved me.

Tommy, A K9 German She pherd, Was Euthanized After 7 Years of Service

After seven dedicated years alongside his handler, Officer Jeremy Berger, Tommy had to say his final goodbye. Sadly, he was battling an aggressive form of cancer that couldn’t be treated. It got to the point where he was in constant pain and couldn’t even enjoy the simple joys of being a dog. Jeremy made the heartbreaking decision to euthanize him to end his suffering.

But here’s the thing—Tommy’s incredible service didn’t go unnoticed. Law enforcement agencies from all over Ohio, along with their K9 partners, came toge ther to honor him one last time. They gathered in front of the Blan chard Valley Veterinary Clinic to salute this amazing dog. I can only imagine how emotional that moment was, especially for Jeremy and his family.

After the procedure, Tommy was carried to the car on a stretchr with a flag draped over him. Officers an d their dogs stood in silence, paying tribute to their fallen colleague. It was a powerful reminder of the bond between K9 officers and their human partners.

His Family Was Devastated

Jeremy and his family were the last ones to say goodbye. They were absolutely devastated. During their fare-well, the final call went over the radio:

Reading that gives me chills. It’s clear that Tommy wasn’t just a dog; he was a beloved member of the law enforcement community.

Rest Well, Tommy

The officers in Ohio were deeply touched by this emotional farewell. Tommy’s watch ended that day, leaving many in tears. Did you know that there are over 50,000 police dogs working in the United States? These amazing animals put their lives on the line every day, and Tommy was one of them.

His service will never be forgoten, and his memory will live on in the hearts of everyo ne he touched. Get some rest, Tommy—you were a good boy!

It’s stories like these that remind us of the incredible impact our four-legged friends have on our lives. I remember meeting a retired police dog once at a community event, and the respect everyone had for him was palpable. Have you ever had an experience with a working dog or known someone who has? I’d love to hear your stories.
