  • The provided instructions are not that useful at helping you fix it onto the wall.
  • The bristles are made out of hard plastic, which could chase the Cat away because its hard plastic bristles are stiff.
  • Once the Cat is done grooming itself, it can be hard to clean out the hair from the brush.

  • The fur removal feature doesn’t work all that well. Sometimes, the fur would stay at its place, even after pressing the button.
  • Upon using the FURminator, you should expect to see some fur flying around. They should do something about this to prevent the fur from looming around.

Choosing The Best Brush for My Cat

The top 10 brushes were made on my personal experience with the use of each brush. However, the truth is, the brush I find perfect isn’t necessarily perfect for your Cat. Each Cat has a different set of features which require different aspects. There are several types of brushes;

  • Slicker brush – they are used to remove loose hair and dead hair. It can also help your Cat avoid matting.
  • Dematting brush– as the name suggests, this brush is made with the sole purpose of removing mats.
  • Dual-sided brush – these are made for all types of cats, it is used to remove tangles and spread natural oil.
  • Mitt/Glove brush – a rubber glove with bristles in the middle. You can pet and groom the Cat at the same time.
  • DeShedding brush – a simple comb that is used to remove tangles, and dead hair.
  • Rubber brushes – with soft rubber bristles that make it easier to brush kittens and cats with sensitive skin.
  • Pin brushes – bristles set wide apart from each other to detangle and remove loose hair.

How to Brush Your Cat?

Seasoned and novice pet parents, alike, are aware of the difficulty in grooming a cat. It can often be cumbersome to get a hold of the Cat and brush them properly. To ensure they stop running away from grooming sessions, you’d have to make them enjoy this experience. I know it seems impossible, but you can make it possible. How can you do that? You can follow the steps below;

Baby steps: Start brushing them gently and slowly. Use the brush that is perfect for your Cat, and pick one area to brush. Steadily, brush other areas where it feels less threatened.

Massage: You can warm up to the grooming with a soothing massage with a warm cloth, or just use your hands.

Treats: Following a grooming session, you can give them a treat for behaving like a good cat. This reinforces a positive attitude in it and encourages them to repeat it more often to get a treat.

Timing: The time you decide to brush the cat matters greatly. Ideally, you should brush the Cat when it’s relaxed.

Direction: As a rule of thumb, always brush the Cat in the direction that their fur grows.

Excess: We all know the problems in regards to excess hair and tangles. To avoid tangles, you need to clean out the excess hair.

Tips for Brushing

I’ve summarized a couple of tips and tricks that can be useful when brushing a cat. It will help you groom the Cat properly, and help you deal with excess fur and mats.

First off, the brush you use is incredibly important. You should make sure that the brush you are using is perfect for your Cat.

Second, if you think that your Cat’s self-cleaning is all the grooming they need, you couldn’t be more wrong. It is important to brush the Cat at least once every day. It sounds cumbersome, I know, but it is your responsibility to take care of them.

Third, removing mats is not something you should handle on your own. Take my advice, contact a professional, and let them take care of this problem. One wrong move, and you’ll injure the adorable feline creature.

Fourth, changing their diet. Yes, much to my surprise, changing its diet could actually help maintain a healthy coat. Give your Cat some omega-rich food to prevent shedding and maintain a healthy coat.

Lastly, during every grooming session, I’d advise you to run a body check. What’s that? A body check means checking the Cat’s body while brushing them to make sure they aren’t injured anywhere. Grooming sessions, also give you the perfect opportunity to check for any possible fleas, ticks, etc.

Does My Cat Have A Skin Problem?

Cats with sensitive skin require special care, especially with regards to grooming. How do you know if your cat has a skin problem? It’s simple, look for the following symptoms;

  • Scratching
  • Unordinary increase in licking
  • Biting the coat
  • Swelling
  • Shedding or patches

The aforementioned body checks could help identify some of these symptoms.

If your Cat does have a skin problem, I would strongly suggest contacting a vet to help you come up with a plan of action. Normally, a cat with sensitive skin would require brushes with soft bristles, something that doesn’t irritate or hurt their skin.

Getting Rid of Matted Fur

Though I recommend visiting the vet if for some reason you choose to do it at home, here are some tips;

Get a metal mat comb that can help deal with the tangle. While brushing the Cat, hold down the hair near the mat, and detangle the hair. Now, as you brush the Cat’s coat, be as gentle as possible. Additionally, use short strokes to avoid pulling their hair. Followed by which, you can cut the mat. Beware, this is where people often make a mistake and cut too deep. This could result in bleeding or a wound. Also, you put your Cat at the risk of getting an infection. Once you cut the mat, comb that area, starting from the tips of the mat.

To avoid matting in general, you need to brush and comb the Cat regularly. Moreover, you can run a body check to help avoid clumps in the skin.

Worst case scenario, your vet would shave the Cat in order to prevent any extensive damage. This step is rare and drastic but necessary. Rest assured, the coat will grow back. However, it is your duty to brush them regularly in order to avoid any future problems.

Picking the Perfect Brush For My Cat

The perfect brush for each Cat varies from one cat to the other, mainly based on the length of their hair. In this portion of the article, I will help you choose the brush that is perfect for your Cat.

Short-hair cats: For this type of Cat, you can use a bristle brush or short-tooth comb. Ideally, a slicker brush is beneficial for short-hair cats. They have the widely spaced bristles that are beneficial for these cats. A hair comb is more suitable for long-haired cats.

Medium-hair cats: These type of cats would need a brush that helps you maintain their silky, lush coat. A slicker brush with closely placed bristles would be the way to go. This will also help avoid mats. Tip – Comb their hair before brushing it because it will help with the dematting.

Long-hair cats: Furminator is a popular choice for grooming large hair cats. However, I don’t recommend it because of the sharpness. It is better to foster a comfortable, grooming experience. Similar to medium-hair cats, I would suggest you comb the cats before brushing.
