Rats are curious creatures.
They love to play, roam around, and socialize with other rats.
But after all of that playing and roaming around, they’ll need a place to hide.
It is their instinctive behavior.

It is pretty simple to understand that rats need a secure place to retire when they are done playing.
And if they are a pet, then that secure place is their cage.

This shouldn’t make you think that this cage is bad by any means.
Well, far from it!
The cage has all the bases covered.
This includes ample room for your rat to play due to the inclusion of ramps and platforms.
Everything else is also plastic.
On one hand, the use of plastic makes the cage both cost-effective and lightweight.

Aside from that, there isn’t anything particularly bad about this cage.
It does what it says, no more, no less.
Things I really like: Quite easy to assemble Price is very compelling Deep plastic base keeps the cage mess free Pretty easy to move around due to its lightweight nature Things I don’t like: Build quality is subpar Rats chew through plastic, so you have to keep an eye on your pet 12. AmazonBasics Pet Habitat

The penultimate cage on this list embodies the spirit of its name.
No, this isn’t a philosophy class; instead it’s my take on the
AmazonBasics Pet Habitat.
Now where were we, oh yes, just like the name suggests, this cage is basic.
By basic I mean it will serve your needs just fine but don’t expect it to excel in anything particular except the price.
AmazonBasics Pet Habitat comes equipped with niceties such as a water bottle, a tip-proof food dish, a hay guard and a ramp leading up to a balcony.
This balcony serves both as a lookout and as a hideout for your rat.
The cage is mostly plastic with an upper wire frame and a deep PP plastic bottom.
Perhaps what makes this cage worth considering is its price.
It is the cheapest cage on this list and one of the cheapest cages anywhere on the market.
This alone puts it on the radar of many people.
To sum it all up:
AmazonBasics Pet Habitat is a cheap cage that delivers on the basics pretty well. Things I really like: Ridiculously cheap The included water bottle, food dish, and hay guard are nice extras Pretty easy to access thanks to two large sized openings, one on the roof and the other in front The cage can be assembled without any tools Things I don’t like: Plastic and rats don’t go well together 13. Key Facts: Material: Wire metal roof with a deep plastic base Ramps and Platforms: 1 ramp with 1 balcony Doors: a couple of doors in the front and on the sides Measurement: 5 x 19 x 17.5 inches Wheels: no wheels Extras: none
Finally, the cage that closes this list has been made by Prevue, the same company who built the cages that occupy the 2
nd and the 8 th place on this list.
Prevue Pet Products 528 is remarkably similar to the
AmazonBasics Pet Habitat.
It adopts the same design language of a wire metal roof and the plastic base, but has a better build and is more pleasing to look at.
Speaking of the similarities, the trustworthy duo of a ramp and a balcony make an appearance.
This is where the similarities end.
There is no hay guard, no water bottle, and no food dish.
The price is also higher too.
Looks like a bad deal, right?
This cage can prove to be a pretty good deal for anyone that just wants something that is well built and is cheap.
Things I really like: Very well built Priced really well Deep plastic base keeps the mess away Things I don’t like: Extremely basic and not a lot going for it
So this was my take on the 13 Best Rat Cages on the market right now.
But wait, don’t scroll away.
Keep reading as there is still a lot you need to know.
How to make your rat feel at home in the cage
So you just bought a cage, and now you are getting ready to introduce your pet to its new home.
Does that cage have everything it needs for your rat to call it a home?
Let me take you through the things you need.
1. A warm bedding
First up, don’t forget to put nice warm bedding for your rat.
Rats love places with warm beddings.
So don’t forget to choose something that’s warm, not easily unraveled and can be replaced quite frequently.
Shredded paper is a pretty good option in this regard.
It is warm and can be replaced quite easily.
And it will need to be replaced quite frequently as rats can mess up the bedding pretty fast.
Old clothes and wood chips also work but be sure that the wood used doesn’t pose a health threat to your pet.
As a general rule, stay away from cedar or pine.
Or if you are lazy like me and don’t want to do the effort, you can buy bedding from a pet store.
2. A food dish
The next thing you ought to place in the cage is a food dish.
Now keep in mind that:
Rats will knock away the food dish if it isn’t heavy enough.
So either has a food dish that is weighty or permanently install a food dish in the cage.
Spill-proof food dishes are pretty common, and you can easily find them in a pet store.
3. Don’t forget the water bottle
Don’t forget to put a water bottle in the cage.
This doesn’t mean leave water in the cage in a dish or something because that won’t work.
Take a water bottle and secure it on the side of the cage with a small pipe attached to the opening.
In this way, your rat can sip water but won’t be able to spill any of it.
While we are on the subject of water, rats drink a lot of water, so make sure the bottle is always full or better yet attach multiple bottles to the cage.
4. Rats need toys
Just like every other pet, rats also need stimulation.
So be sure to place plenty of toys in the cage.
Toys, especially the ones which require some brainstorming, are very healthy for your rat.
In addition to the toys mentioned above, place some toys which require some physical effort like a running wheel or a climbing toy.
These toys will not make your rat happy but will also help him stay healthy.
5. A Hammock is always a good idea
You thought only humans loved Hammocks, right?
Well, your rat loves the hammock as much as you.
This is exactly the reason why you should put a hammock in its cage.
You can make a hammock at home from old clothing or can buy one from a pet store.
6. Location is everything
And last but not least, place the cage in a well-ventilated area.
Place the cage where there is plenty of fresh air.
Related Questions Can you keep a rat in an aquarium? No!
Rats are instinctively active.
So they are the happiest when they have plenty of room to play and explore.
An aquarium is not ideal for a rat is it offers almost no exploration to your rat.
Plus, it also horrible when it comes to ventilation.
So stay away from an aquarium.
Do rats like wheels? Yes, they do!
Just make sure the wheels you give to your rat isn’t a small hamster or a mouse wheel as those can be pretty small for a rat.
Plus hamster wheels are made from bars which can hurt your rat’s feet.
Can rats live alone? Rats are quite social.
In the wild rats live in a large family group and so they are instinctively social.
Taking that into account, pet rats live their best when they have companions.
The more, the merrier.
