As the chief life-saving officer at Stray Rescue of St. Louis (SRSL), Donna Lochmann has countless rescues under her belt. Yet, every time she hears about a pup in need, she jumps into action without hesitation.
When she got word of a little pup hiding in an abandoned home, she quickly gathered her gear and headed out.
Upon arrival, she found the house in ruins, but amidst the debris was a small face peeking out, trying to make sense of the situation. Lochmann spoke gently to the pup, assuring her that she was there to help.
Despite being wary, the pup seemed to understand that she could trust Lochmann.
Building Trust
To avoid frightening the pup further, Lochmann offered her some tasty food.

The shelter staff welcomed her warmly: “You’re coming with us. You will never be alone again. Just take this leap of faith with us. It’s ok if you have to crawl. We’re so proud of you. We can’t wait to show you toys, treats, puppy friends, and all the love you’ve been missing. You’re so worthy, little one.”
At the shelter, Kukala experienced things she had never known before—soft beds, playful toys, and friendly faces eager to shower her with attention. Her days of scavenging for survival were replaced by a routine filled with comfort and care.
