It’s not all getting the bad guys, or writing tickets, though. Often, it is just about being at the right time in the right place to impact on the strangest things. What touches me is when I read a recent story related to two Fort Pierce, Florida deputies James Gettings and Troy Glover.
Septic Drain Whine That Breaks Hearts
Imagine that — Deputies Gettings and Glover were out doing their job serving civil process paperwork to a Fort Pierce home. As they turned to leave, a noise caught their attention—slight whimpering from somewhere nearby. Noticing this, and concerned for her welfare, they began to investigate. I mean, who wouldn’t?
The deputies traced the noise to a septic drain on an adjacent vacant lot, according to a post by the St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office on Facebook. They found a shocking and heartbreaking sight. A tiny, drenched pup had become stuck neck-deep in a collapsing septic drain – only its small head protruding from the muck. I mean, could it be any worse than that?
The officers acted without another second waver. Despite the fact that the dog was scared and a little stressed, they were able to use a catch pole to carefully direct him out of danger. Grateful that someone able to take command in such a scary situation stepped up.
They found him covered in muck and obviously agitated after they rescued him. They didn’t just stop there, they gave him several baths to calm him down and make it more comfortable! I can see them washing him gingerly, speaking gently to soothe his anxiety.
Deputy Gettings Didn’t Wait Long To Decide
So the next thing that needed to be done was to attempt tracking down whoever it was that owned this puppy. The officer searched the area, hoping someone might be able to identify the little guy. However did nobody show up. That’s when Deputy Gettings’ heart strings were plucked. But he’d never be able to live with himself if he dumped the pup at a shelter.
In that moment he decided to take him in. What a little spur of the moment but very sincere decision! He thought it was simply destiny that had entwined their paths.
Following some extensive rehabilitation — particularly treatment for his rear legs, which were non functioning when he was found — the pup called Puddle was able to settle down in a permanent household.
Deputy Gettings’ wife, Rachael; their daughter, Evelyn; and basset hound Lacie were there to greet him. Puddle seemed to fit right in with the family.
The deputy told The Daily Mail: ‘He mainly just likes to chill. “He loves being home.”
Welcome Home, Puddle!
Stories like this remind me just how special the connection between humans and animals is. According to the ASPCA, 3.3 million dogs enter U.S. animal shelters every year — did you know that? Like Puddle, many of them are lost or abandoned. So it is nice to see the actions of people like Deputy Gettings.
Puddle now has a warm home filled with love — and we can only hope that he will have many happy years to come with his new family. A perfect example of how one kind act can change a life, forever.
So the next time you hear some light whimpering or see something amiss, take a minute to investigate. Who knows — you might meet your newest best friend.
