The well-known saying “A dog is a man’s best friend” has once again been proved right, but humans continue to show cruelty to these lovable creatures.
Many dog lovers judge puppies by their appearance — especially if they’re looking to adopt a puppy from a shelter.
That’s what little Dutchess, a beautiful puppy with a big heart, waited for on the other side of the kennel doors; Dutchess was so ready to meet her forever family and everyone she met – at least the ones who paused for a moment on their way through the aisles where the puppies are held – disappointed her by not giving her a chance to show them she was someone who really wanted love and affection.
Waiting For A Fairytale
Dutchess, a shelter dog, was one of the most popular pups under the care of Orange County Animal Servics (OCAS) because of her playful nature and positive energy.
But even so, that didn’t seem enough to help her find a home with the people who visit OCAS looking for new furry family members, as the only thing they were able to see were the cysts under both of her eyes.
As the organization’s members put it in a post on Facebook, nobody even wanted to look at Dutchess so much, let alone request to take her home.
Those who would be that considerate to approach her kennel, were there to make inappropriate comments and questions, including:
“She looks so ugly.”
“What’s wrong with her?”
“She’ll never get adopted.”
Luckily for Dutchess, she doesn’t speak human, so these remarks didn’t bother her one bit. Instead, she was always super optimistic every time a new face walked into the shelter, that maybe this was her day to go to a forever home.
While OCAS didn’t have success in finding a new home for Dutchess, the work of this second rescue organization, Rescue Dogs Dream, Inc. (RDD) took her on the road after watching Dutchess’ story that they saw and didn’t want to see her spend another day at the shelter!
Foster Paradise
Dutchess had a big smile on her face, so it was clear she was enjoying her time in a foster home.
Her foster parent created all the conditions for Dutchess to feel as comfortable as possible, and the pooch (as well as the RDD) were eternally grateful.
The RDD greeted the doggo via a Facebook post, in which they also provided all updates on Dutchess:
“We actually want to thank Chris Murphy for bringing her to us, and Beth Lord for fostering her. She’s doing well, and so happy to be FREE. She chowed down a McDonald’s cheeseburger and is getting very comfortable.”
Starts Off As A Cute Duckling And Ends As A Beautiful Swan
Even though the cysts below her eyes made Dutchess a cute dog, a vet surgeon determined the cysts needed to be removed in order for her to feel more comfortable and healthy.
Then came great news while waiting for the surgery – Dutchess found her for ever home, or better to say… home found her.
The RDD staff was pleasantly surprised when over ten applications came in for the adoption of Dutchess. It was not hard to find a perfect family for this cute doggo, as they have mentioned in the update post:
“We can officially announce we found her PERFECT match!! She will have a new Mom & Dad who treat their pups like kids. Dad works from home. They just lost one of their fur babies, and were looking for the right fit.”
The operation was successful, and over the course of a few days, Dutchess healed with the help of her new family who spoiled her with as much love as possible.
Dutchess Becomes Queen Lena
Dutchess’ new owners chose to rename her Lena, and judging by how well she was doing, she might get promoted from duchess to queen.
She’s living her best life with a loving family and a furry brother.
To her parents, Lena is a miracle, too. They lost onepup just before meeting Lena, and the great dame has been a true blessing for them.
Lena’s blog is nothing short of a beautiful miracle now updated with the fact she is doing totally fine She does great with the other dog, and is very good with dog traning:
“She graduated from a level one dogie training class, and is registered for level two, and then a good canine citizen class. She’s just so sweet, just loves to play and be with us all the time.”
Lena’s fairy tale has a happy ending, but there are still plenty of dogs in shelters who are waiting for theirs.
To finish, I’d like to share part of the OCASpost — something that we all, as dog lovers, need to consider:
“So come to the shelter with an open heart. Look inside every kennel. Look for Dutchess. Seek the ones nobody has the courage to take. That’s how you save a life. That’s how you make a difference. That’s how we change the world for one.”
