We are not always aware of the history of dogs that come into a shelter, but each one speaks to us through their eyes and body language.
Before arriving at ACCT Philly, Zara experienced heartbreak, which the eyes convey.
The elderly dog — sitting in a bed in her kennel — was trembling. What had the saddest eyes that broke everyone’s hearts that made direct eye contact with her.
Zara was in a horrible condition: she was very thin, and worst of all, she had skin infections and was in pain.
She needed to get out of the shelter and go to a foster home to recuperate.
A Lovely Couple Makes The Decision To Foster Her.
Zara’s story broke the heart of Jessica Mellen-Graaf, president of Philly Bully Team, a foster-based rescue out of Philadelphia.
She shared Zara’s gut-wrenching video on social media and pleaded, ‘Can anyone foster her? Mellen-Graaf wanted to find her a way out of the shelter immediately.
Prena and her husband Kelvin were heartbroken when they saw the post.
While the couple has fostered for both ACCT Philly and Philly Bully Team, they were thinking about taking a break, but when they saw Zara, they knew they couldn’t.

They picked the pup, adopted her from the Pennsylvania shelter, and then bathed her at home.
Not long after, Zara went to live with her foster parents Prena and Kelvin. She just had to settle down a bit.
If she was sad and confused still, at least the dog had no trouble accepting their help, sure hand had come as it always did.
Once she got comfortable, she was introduced to her foster siblings Meeka and Tootsie. Zara was also welcomed by the dogs and her visits became more frequent.
Her foster-mom gave her medicated baths and spoiled her. They lavished her with love and made sure she knew they stood with her.
Slowly but surely the doggo started healing and settling in. With the healing of her skin, fur began to sprout back.
The Heartbreak of Zara that Love Fixed
It was with the adopted parents, and after being nurtured by Meeka and Tootsie, Zara slowly regained her confidence.
She started to smile and know the charm of life. Zara enjoyed her time running in the field with her doggy sisters and freedom

This darling girl enjoys hanging out with her fosters. She doesn’t like being alone.
It pains Prena to imagine the life Zara led.
They know that she had many litters of puppies and had her final litter just recently. They are heartbroken because no one knows where Zara’s children are.
Prena believes the doggo had a family at some point during her life, and expressed a loving nature from the moment they took her in.
Even though Zara’s foster parents look after her with great love, they are unable to keep her because they have decided to carry on fostering.

Reiterating that she appreciates the dog, Huntington said: “Oh, I’d love to keep her, she’s one of my favorites that we’ve had in a long while. Prena told GeoBeats Animals, “She is welcome to stay here as long as she wants, but we can’t keep fostering if we keep her.”
Hopefully, soon this little pup will be in the right home and with the right humans who will love her!
Shout out to Philly Bully Team and Zara’s wonderful foster family, who showered her with love and helped her heal inside and out.
