Sometimes just another day can become the adventure of a lifetime, and that is exactly how it always happens when you are out in nature with your dogs. The way Matt and Josi Struck—outdoorsy parents of four based in Portland, Oregon—discovered this was certainly more thrilling than your average hike. And she frequently brings along her two favorite dogs, so every hike is a family affair.
Rescue Mission
They were hoping for nothing more than fresh air, some exercise and maybe a few chuckles along the trail that day. However, they were walking along a small path and Matt saw that the ground was becoming somewhat unstable.
He told their dogs, “Watch out, it gets a little sketch over here,” and then — bam!
Almost as soon as they got the words out of their mouths, one of their dogs — Dexter slipped off the ledge. Just the thought puts a flutter in my heart! Fortunately for them, Matt and Josi always come prepared–when their dogs tag along on a hike, they make sure they’ve packed in a pack, leash, and harness.
Matt jumped into action as their other dog stayed where he smartly was. He took hold of Dexter’s harness and began reeling him in. There were some tense seconds, but Matt got Dexter to land back on dry ground and return to his four furry black feet.
The funniest part? For all the world that seemed to have had no effect on Dexter. The moment he was back on his feet, he was back to being nothing at all. Typical dog, right?
The heart-stopping moment was filmed in its entirety by Matt and posted on TikTok where it has since gone viral.
All’s Well That Ends Well
The couple finished their hike, though now with an eye on a more alert adventurous pup. Fortunately for them, they made it home safe and sound although I’m sure this is an experience no one involved will forget any time soon, regardless of whether they want to.

When it comes to safety, this is one of those “A-ha” moments that was enlightening in the best way possible. One time when I was hiking with my own dog, Luna — of course a curious pup of hers wandered a little too close to the precipice. And since that day, I have most certainly been more wary on the trails.
Stay Safe
Taking him for a hike is one of the best ways to be healthy, happy, and active with your dog. However, safety is of utmost importance and avoiding surprises are the key to having quality time with others.
Each dog that goes on a hike should have an ID tag and a stable leash six feet long, american kennel club confirmed. Leashes are must on trails, which tend to be narrow and filled with tempting smells and sounds that will distract your pup. They may take off after a squirrel — or, in Dexter’s case, fall off the path by mistake.

In fact, thousands of pets go missing or get injured each year while they are off leading their Pet Adventure in the great outdoors. That’s why a well-fitted leash and harness are more than some accessories— they’re more like the essentials!
So before you go out on your next trip, prep yourself. Stay close to your pet, keep an eye out there and, most importantly, appreciate nature together.
Happy hiking!
