You know those heartwarming stories that restore your faith in humanity? But I saw this one yesterday about a puppy named Halo, and I just have to post it for you.
While the wonderful people from Sidewalk Specials were out in the field doing their magic, they came across a little puppy all by himself on the side of the road. She was buried in the earth, her large sorrowful eyes seeking a soul to help. She seemed to be waiting for a miracle, to be plucked out of her sad little universe.
The moment she saw her rescuers, she began wagging her little tail in excitement and you could tell hope came back into her eyes. She knew these kind souls were there to help her — who could possibly resist that face?!
It melted hearts when the team discovered her former owners had discarded her. One of the rescuers picked her up and cradled her in his arms, almost as if to say ‘Don’t worry sweetheart, you’re safe now. They decided she deserved the best and set out to find her a forever home.
The Needs Care At A Foster Home
They took her to the vet for a thorough examination. The unfortunate creature has been diagnosed with mange but her new human pals were not put off by that! They bathed her and exposed her in this adorable sweater to maintain her heat and cozy.
Halo is the name that they chose for her (and, of course — it makes sense because she was such a heavenly sweet angel). Halo required a lot of tender loving care and so she was placed into an emergency foster home to commence her rehabilitation. Halo finally felt safe and happy, for the first time.
She also was fostered around the dog that lived at her foster home — a dog named Safari. The two hit it off instantly! They were inseparable, spending all their time playing and cuddling. And don’t you just love how quickly animals can get attached?
Her Dream Permanent Family
Before Halo found herself the new love of a forever family. Within 2 weeks in foster care she was ready to meet them and they had been waiting their whole life to meet her.
First-time meeting Halo with her new family — pure magic. The hearts of those within instantly melted. Zac, one of Halo’s human siblings, told The Dodo “Lily and me were the first ones to see her and we started crying.” I mean, can you blame them? I mean, how could anyone not weep over such a lovely dog?

Now Halo has all the love a dog could wish for. Her siblings won’t stop showering her with kisses and snuggles. Her youngest human sister, Ella, even sings lullabies to her while cradling her in one arm. Talk about being adored!
She really enjoys riding in the car to pick up her brothers from school. She waits, and dozes a bit if she has to, but as soon as she hears their voices it doesn’t matter how tired she is — head out the window, miswheezing her welcome. It’s the cutest thing ever.
Life is unthinkable for her family without her. And Halo’s mom — who is named Melanie — told us, “She is just the smartest and sweetest and best dog in the entire world, and having her part of our family not only changed her life but ours so much for the better.”
These days, Halo plays fetch, snuggles with her humans and is bathed in love. She shall never know what it is like to feel rejected or abandoned ever again!
I love stories like Halo. The ASPCA reports that about 3.3 million dogs go into shelters in the U.S. each year — did you know? What a fabulous thought to consider, how many other happy ending stories like Halo’s are in the making right now?

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you to everyone that provided all the things needed to get Halo in her forever home. It is a gloriously simple reminder of the power of mercy and compassion—the kind that can change the world, not just for the animals we save, but also for us.
