Lovable Yet Overlooked Pup Waits More Than 700 Days in Shelter Watching His Buddies Leave for New Homes

For over 700 days, Hashbrown (nickname) — a Pitbull mix, has been stuck at the Sherwood Humane Animal Shelter in Arkansas, sadly waiting for her own forever home.

Although he is very sweet and loving, some have overlooked this big sweetheart because of breed-specific legislation in Arkansas that shows a ban on Pitbulls. This legislation has led to him being unable to be adopted as would-be adopters are put off by the legal restraints attached with his breed.

Hashbrown is described as the ultimate roommate: lovey, calm and a blast! He has been at the shelter since October 14, but despite this lengthy stay he is still looking for his forever home. The shelter is a stressful place for dogs but Hashbrown has remained his sweet self.

He’s been at the shelter since October 14,2022 and that is just way too long to be without a home. He probably gets passed over because he is such a quiet little fellow, never barking or making any ‘Hay! Wag wag, jump hop look at me!,” says his adoption profile.

This just shows how his gentle nature could in fact make him somewhat invisible to potential adopters who may be lured by more exuberant dogs.

To make matters worse, he has a pitbull mix breed. BUT all of his possible adopters keep passing him over since he lives in a state with the pitbull ban (which is currently my worse nightmare at this point) Stigma associated with pitbulls causes people to make false assumptions about their nature.

Despite these challenges, however, Hashbrown is still a happy pup who simply wants to find that perfect home where he will be loved for exactly the dog he is.

Instead of going home to a warm, comfy bed — Hashbrown is sat in the back, watching all his doggie friends get picked up.

For the shelter staff and volunteers — who have become fond of Hashbrown, his situation is even sadder. And that someone will look past the breed and realize who Hashbrown really is — a caring, loving companion.

On his profile, it says “If we got to re-name Hashbrown we would name him Goodest because he is the goodest boy ever.” I think this sentiment, shared with or without the idea of Hashbrown previously existing in your mind is a testament to just how beloved he really was. Susan, a volunteer who takes Hashbrown out for his daily stroll — is seeing it first hand.

On his 600th day in the Arkansas shelter, she posted a video of Hashbrown laying down on the floor inside of his small kennel with one paw sticking out and staring at everyone passing by him with this look through soulful eyes.

600+ days and nights in a kennel. Shocking…. Poor Hashbrown. It’s not fair at all! He needs a hero ASAP,” Susan can be heard saying in the clip. This request emphasizes Hashbrown’s imminence in needing a home where he can blossom.

Hashbrown is with his new family. The SHAS team is hoping and praying that Hashbrownd has someone looking for him. Each passing day that he remains in extended shelter is just another sad and wasted one.

Though their nature is one of the most sweet and well-behaved, dog shelter environment is very stressful place men for dogs – even if it saves them from danger.

Hashbrown is still hopeful his wait wasn’t for naught. He is micro-chipped, neutered and current on all vaccinations His perfect home will be an at-home adult, with a large yard and 6 ft high fence who do not have small animals unless the new family meets him first to ensure they get along.

May enjoy another dog if its female as he does like his ladies! I know for sure Hashbrown would do fine with just himself as the pet.

Lucky for him, though — after living at the shelter over two years Hashbrown was adopted in October 2024. Potentially a happy ending for Hashbrown — giving him the chance to live in a place where he can be well cared-for, despite Breed Specific Laws making it difficult.

His story illustrates the effect of breed discrimination and sheds light on why we should choose appropriate behavior in dogs rather than generalizing breeds when thinking about getting a new pet.
